exocad webview is the free 3D viewer from exocad GmbH, the German developer of DentalCAD. It is built for dental technicians who want to show a design to a clinician, and for dentists who need to open STL, OBJ or PLY files from a lab or scanner. What it does
- Opens open 3D mesh formats: .stl, .obj, .ply, .wrl, .off, .eoff, .xyz, .xyzn, .xyznb, .xyzc and .asc.
- Opens ZIP archives that contain compatible models, and loads several files at once, for example upper jaw, lower jaw and a crown.
- Shows colour: full texture mapping and vertex colours, so coloured intraoral scans keep their appearance.
- Lets you adjust the transparency of each mesh, switch between flat and smooth shading, and use orthographic or perspective view.
- Loads files from iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive and similar services on mobile devices.
- For DentalCAD users, it opens HTML files exported from DentalCAD and zipped DentalCAD project folders. It shows annotations made in DentalCAD and opens password-protected DentalCAD scenes.
- Opens exocad scenes shared through a dentalshare link and loads facial scans.
How dental teams use it
Lab: send a design preview to the dentist
- Finish the design in DentalCAD and export the scene as an HTML file, or share it through dentalshare. dentalshare access depends on your licence.
- Send the file or link to the clinic.
- The dentist opens it on a phone, a tablet or in a browser at webview.dental. Nothing needs to be installed.
- The dentist checks contours, contacts and annotations, then approves the design or asks for changes.
Clinic: check an intraoral scan or a lab model
- Export the scan from your scanner software as STL or PLY. Use PLY if you want to keep colour.
- Drag the file into webview.dental, or open it in the mobile app from Files, Dropbox or Google Drive.
- Rotate and zoom to check margins and gaps in the scan, or confirm the model before 3D printing.
Chairside: show the patient the planned restoration
- Load the jaw scans and the proposed restoration together.
- Make the antagonist or the preparation semi-transparent so the patient can see the planned tooth clearly.
- Use the tablet app so the patient can see the model from different angles.
Install and first run
- Browser (any OS, including Mac): open webview.dental in a current Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari. JavaScript must be enabled. Drag and drop a file to view it.
- Windows: install “exocad view” from the Microsoft Store. It is free and supports x86, x64 and ARM processors.
- iPhone / iPad: install “exocad webview” from the App Store. It needs iOS or iPadOS 15.6 or later. Open files from the Files app or from cloud storage.
- Android: install “exocad webview – STL 3D Viewer” from Google Play.
Common problems: very large files, several hundred MB, can be slow or fail to load on older phones. For big datasets, use the browser on a desktop. If a DentalCAD scene is password-protected, ask the lab for the password. The viewer cannot bypass it.
Limitations
- It is a viewer. You cannot design, edit, cut, repair or export meshes, and you cannot design restorations.
- It does not open DICOM or CBCT volumes. It only opens surface meshes.
- Measuring tools are not listed in exocad’s feature description, so do not rely on it for measurements.
- Some features, such as dentalshare links and DentalCAD HTML export, are only useful if someone in the workflow has DentalCAD.
- exocad does not describe it as a diagnostic tool. Use it for communication and visual checks.
DentalCAD: is there a free download?
No. exocad DentalCAD is commercial software. exocad does not sell it directly. It is sold through authorised resellers and partner manufacturers, often bundled with scanners or milling systems. Licences come as a permanent (perpetual) licence with an optional upgrade contract, or as a Flex licence with upgrades included. A USB dongle protects the licence. “DentalCAD free download” offers on unofficial sites are cracked copies. exocad has a dedicated anti-piracy programme. It states that it monitors unlicensed use and takes users to court.
