exocad webview: View and Share DentalCAD Cases for Free

This guide is for dentists who received a design from a lab that uses exocad, for lab staff who send those designs, and for anyone who searched for an “exocad webview download”. The short answer: exocad webview is exocad’s free 3D viewer. You do not always need to download anything. An HTML export from DentalCAD opens in a normal web browser, a webview link opens at webview.dental, and plain STL, OBJ or PLY files can be dragged into the same web app. The apps for Windows, iPhone, iPad and Android are free, need no registration and add offline access and cloud-storage import. webview is a viewer only: it is not a free copy of DentalCAD. Not tested yet: the facts below come from exocad’s product page, the exocad documentation wiki and the official app store listings, all checked on 31 October 2026.

The supported open formats listed by exocad are .stl, .obj, .ply, .wrl, .off, .eoff, .xyz, .xyzn, .xyznb, .xyzc and .asc, plus ZIP archives that contain them. Several files can be loaded together, so an upper jaw, a lower jaw and a crown can sit in one scene.

Opening a DentalCAD HTML export

exocad’s documentation describes the steps on the viewer side as three: double-click the HTML file so it opens in the browser, enter the password if the lab set one, then use the viewer. In the viewer:

  • Group selector (top left): tick or untick objects to show or hide them, switch an object to mesh view with the wheel icon, and change its transparency with the slider. Making the antagonist semi-transparent is the quickest way to see contacts and the emergence profile.
  • Settings: language, texture, shading and product information.
  • Standard views (bottom right): arrows for fixed orientations and a Default view button. Click and drag to rotate freely.

The file opens on any computer with a browser, which makes it the simplest option for a clinic PC where staff cannot install software.

Opening a webview link from dentalshare

A link is easier than an attachment when the scene is large or the email system blocks HTML files. Tap or paste it, enter the password if asked, and the scene opens at webview.dental or in the app. Two limits are worth knowing. First, exocad states that data shared this way is stored for 90 days and then deleted automatically, so a link from last year will not work; ask the lab to share the scene again. Second, the person sending the link needs a dentalshare account in DentalCAD; if the dentalshare button is missing, exocad tells users to contact their reseller to enable it.

For labs: sending a design that opens first time

  1. In DentalCAD, choose Tools > Html export for a file, or Tools > Share scene via dentalshare webview link for a link. Both are also on the right-click menu of the Save icon.
  2. Choose visible objects only unless the dentist needs hidden objects such as the original scans. A smaller scene loads faster on a phone.
  3. Set a password if the scene contains patient data, and send the password through a different channel from the file or link.
  4. For a link, click Copy to clipboard once the upload finishes and paste it into the message. Upload time depends on how complex the scene is.
  5. Tell the dentist the link expires after 90 days, so they review it in time.

Using webview on each device

Windows 10 and Windows 11

The browser is enough for most people. Install the Microsoft Store app “exocad view” if you want a desktop icon and file opening without a browser tab. It runs on ARM laptops as well as standard Intel and AMD PCs.

Mac

Use webview.dental in a current browser. HTML exports from DentalCAD open the same way as on Windows.

iPhone, iPad and Android

The mobile apps add a touch-and-hold function to set the rotation point and can open files directly from iCloud, Dropbox and Google Drive. A tablet is the better choice for showing a planned restoration to a patient at the chair.

Limitations

  • No export, so no “webview to STL”. exocad’s feature list covers viewing only. If you need an STL for printing, ask the lab to export it from DentalCAD.
  • No design or editing. You cannot change margins, contacts or the restoration. Send comments back to the lab.
  • No measuring tools are listed by exocad, so do not use it to check thickness or gaps in microns.
  • Surface meshes only. It does not open DICOM or CBCT volumes; for those, see our free dental DICOM viewers.
  • Not a diagnostic tool. exocad presents it for viewing and communication.
  • Passwords cannot be bypassed. If you lost the password, the lab has to send the scene again.

Who it suits, and who it does not

Good fit: dentists approving lab designs from exocad labs; labs that want clinics to see a design before milling; clinics checking intraoral scans or print models in STL or coloured PLY on any device.

Poor fit: anyone who needs to edit, repair or measure a mesh, or to open CBCT data; clinics whose labs use 3Shape, which share cases through 3Shape Communicate instead; anyone looking for free design software. DentalCAD itself is commercial, and our article on the exocad DentalCAD free download question explains what exocad actually offers for free. Other free viewers are compared in our free dental CAD viewers hub.

FAQ

Is exocad webview free to download?

Yes. exocad describes it as free of charge and without registration, and the app store listings show it as free. The web version needs no download at all.

Is there an exocad webview download for PC or Windows 11?

Yes. It is in the Microsoft Store as “exocad view” and requires Windows 10 version 16299 or later, so it installs on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Is there an exocad webview app for Mac?

We found no Mac app listing. On a Mac, open webview.dental in a current browser; DentalCAD HTML exports also open directly in the browser.

Can I convert an exocad webview file to STL?

Not in webview. It has no export function, so the lab has to export the STL from DentalCAD.

Why does my exocad webview link no longer work?

exocad keeps data shared through webview links for 90 days and then deletes it. Ask the lab to share the scene again.

Does exocad webview work on iPhone?

Yes. Version 1.6.22 requires iOS or iPadOS 15.6 or later.
